![]()         As a practicing sound therapist since late 2000, I play recorded music through the body by means of a mat with speakers built into it, and facilitate the movement of subtle-energies. During these years, my clients have reported such experiences as brilliant light (of any color), a sensation of an electrical circuit being completed, total bliss and relaxation. In addition, there is often the feeling of being asleep, aware, alert, and floating, whirling, levitating or flying away all at the same time. There is usually pain relief, vivid "dreams", a sense of connection to the Divine, and an understanding of life events previously puzzling to them. Over time, some clients have changed their lives profoundly. I have observed their changes in respiration, and have experienced all of the above personally. Always on my mind however, were the following questions. Why does this work so well? How does it work? Delving into the mechanics of vibrational medicine as well as researching healing through sound, I have discovered a correlation between my observed results and those reported by people after years of daily meditation. In particular, it appears that my clients regularly experience Kundalini rising during their sessions. This is an elusive and desirable event that is typically sought by meditators. Kundalini means "coiled serpent" in Sanskrit, and is a form of energy that lies dormant at the rear of our root chakra, near the base of the spine. Chakras are whirling subtle-energy centers located in the body, along the spine and fanning out through the body. When Kundalini rises, it travels up the spine and the chakras are opened and cleared of stress. An expansion of consciousness can occur, and subtle-energy bridges of learning and communication are built between our physical personality and the knowledge contained in our own higher vibrational structures of consciousness. Meditation causes unique changes in the body. The reported symptoms of the awakening of Kundalini energies are roaring sounds, high-pitched whistles in the head, a brilliant sensation of light flooding the entire being and then a feeling of total bliss. In addition, when a person achieves a deep state of meditation, breathing becomes slow and shallow. Heart activity becomes synchronized creating standing waves of a particular frequency in the heart-aorta oscillator system. Once this is activated, it triggers further oscillators in the brain. Itzhak Bentov, a long-term transcendental meditator and researcher used a ballistocardiograph to record changes that occurred in the heart and brain during deep states of meditation. In addition to the symptoms of Kundalini rising, he theorized that there are additional changes in the central nervous system caused by the vibrational waves in the ventricular cavity of the brain. As this vibrationally induced current moves, the gray matter of the brain becomes polarized in the direction of energy flow. At areas of resistance, the signal hammers away until it can pass through. This process continues until the circular brain loop along the sensory cortex has been freed of old stress points and blockages to energy flow. The limbic system lies adjacent to this area and contains the pleasure centers. Thus, Kundalini rising can create sensations of pleasure and bliss. How does the application of sound, music, vibration and harmonics bring a person into a meditative state so quickly? I theorize that the brain loop cycle may be accelerated or enhanced by the quick relaxation effect caused by sound therapy. The heart more quickly creates the standing waves, which triggers the brain oscillation. This cycle is built into our inner biocircuitry and can be accessed by regular meditation, or sound therapy such as I use. The musical vibration may be considered the "hammer" which clears the chakras and stress points in the brain. As well, chakras are the major mediators of all energy in the body as well as all energy coming into the body. They help distribute energy expressions for various physical, emotional, mental and spiritual functions. Chakras are connected to the physical body primarily through the spinal system and endocrine glands. Specific rhythms, tones, vocalizations and instruments can be used to balance, stimulate and interact with the flow of electro-magnetic energies of the chakra system. The most effective and simple way to restore balance is through sound and music. The tones of our musical scale resonate with the seven major chakras of the body. Certain combinations of tones and rhythms have very specific effects on our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual states. The order and rhythm of tones and the mixing of tones into various melodies links the energies of the body together. This can be used to facilitate healing, intuition, dream enlightenment, and so on. This is also what occurs when Kundalini rises. The simple act of listening to music quickly affects our mood (emotions), physical being, spiritual connection and ability to concentrate or work. Imagine then the profound effect of vibrational music applied to and through the body along the spine! Why do we want to meditate at all? Why use alternative healing modalities involving the raising of vibrations? What are the true benefits? We all have our own reasons, my clients typically request relaxation, stress and/or pain reduction, and solutions to life events. The by-product is often a connection to the Divine and to others. One client in particular has come to me regularly for years seeking tools to help her survive her challenges in life. She is in her mid-70's now and began her sessions with absolutely no knowledge of energy work, meditation, or her subconscious role in creating the crises in her life. Each time she requests specific help and guidance, a vision of her deceased mother or brother comes to her. They have a way of giving her information based on her life experiences, which she can accept and use. She is keenly aware that all of the answers are coming from within, the Sound Therapy gives her the ability to access them. Awareness, emotional relief and joy are always her end product. In addition to the previously stated effects of meditation, there is a much more profound effect on the evolution of human consciousness. Many secrets held in the subconscious mind may be discovered. Among these secrets are the hidden lessons we have chosen to learn during this lifetime. With these lessons revealed, we may come to learn better ways to deal with our multiple dimensions of being. When dysfunctional behavior is changed, illnesses that have been created at higher vibrational levels may be healed or lessened. What more lovely way to do this than having music flow through our bodies, lifting us effortlessly to a higher vibration? Sources consulted: "Vibrational Medicine" by Richard Gerber, MD, "Sacred Sounds" by Ted Andrews, "Healing Sounds" by Jonathan Goldman         Ancient peoples have long understood and used the healing powers of vibration and music. Famous composers, modern musicians and scientists have noticed and used the power of sound and vibration. Vibrational medicine can be traced to W.O. Schumann, a German scientist (early 20th century) who identified a key resonance in the earth's atmosphere that hums at 7.83 cycles/second. Scientists later discovered that when energy waves at this cycle were introduced into the body, injuries and fractures often healed more quickly. Hans Jenny was a pioneer in the study of the effect of sound on matter. He scientifically documented the effect of sound on various substances, demonstrating that sound creates, preserves and rearranges form. He called this work "Cymatics". With vibro-acoustic sound, the sound waves are projected throughout the entire body. In areas of relaxation, the waves pass through. Where there is a blockage, the sound waves penetrate the area, break up the blockage, and rearrange the molecules. When waves of sound rearrange the molecules into a coherent waveform, the patterns will continue to hold long after the music has stopped. This is evidenced by clients who notice certain relief after a session and often report continued release long after the session has ended. This release may go on for hours, days or weeks, and the effects can last for months. Different types of music can affect your mood or energy level. This is called entrainment. When used properly, it can have profound results on our state of consciousness. When the vibrations of the music are analyzed they are found to contain very specific numbers of cycles per second which correlate to brainwave states. These are beta, alpha, theta and delta:
